It Is True,"Cash For Caulker" Could Mean $12K In Your Pocket Or Mine
by Jim Weaver01/02/10
Right now you are probably saying, “Jim, I watch FOX News and 60 Minutes and if the President pledged to give me $12,000 I would have heard about it.” The fact is that you probably did hear about it but unless you are a total Policy Wonk or a Remodeling Geek, “Cash for Caulkers” would just be more Government gibberish. Friends, I assure you that Cash for Caulkers looks to be more than a sound byte because Cash for Caulkers doesn’t propagate some political agenda, rather at its core it is a two-pronged attack to combat out current economic woes and our longer term energy use.
Cash for Caulkers Basics This past December, as part of a broader plan to stimulate the economy, President Obama proposed a new program that would reward homeowners for using energy-efficient appliances and insulation while at the same time doling out cash to encourage people to re-invest in their homes which would also help stimulate the economy. Under what is affectionately known as “Cash for Caulkers”, homeowners would be eligible to receive up to $12,000 in rebates. In order to receive your rebate you would need to hire a licensed Remodeling Contractor familiar with Cash for Caulkers to conduct a home energy audit of your home in order to assist you with specifying, acquiring and installing the approved products and gear.
What is Covered?
While the specifics are still being finalized, it seems likely that major appliances such as air conditioners, heating systems, washing machines, refrigerators, windows and insulation would be covered under the program. (There may be a waiver available for your solar-powered lawn mower, but you can research this on your own nickel).
Jim, Why Shouldn’t I be Skeptical?
So far, there is no income restriction on who is eligible. In fact, homes that take full advantage of the program could see their energy bills drop as much as 20%.
